During class, students should expect to be engaged in a variety of instructional strategies: independent work, small group work, learning centers, teacher-student meetings, and large group sessions.
Points of Emphasis:
- Course Calendar = Students should refer to the class calendar frequently. It will remain the most current and will include assignment details, links to additional resources, and assignment due dates.
- Electronic devices = all electronic devices that are brought into room C111 are to be used for academic purposes only. If an electronic device is used for non-academic purposes then appropriate disciplinary action will occur. Students will refrain from all non-academic uses of electronic devices including, but not limited to, the access of social media, the capture of images without the written consent of the legal guardian of the person(s) being captured, and/or the capture of audio without the written consent of the legal guardian of the person(s) being captured.
- Attendance = If you are absent from school on the day that an assignment is given, you MAY be required to complete an alternate assignment which MAY have a different point value than the original assignment.
- Tardies = When you receive a tardy, it is Mr. Kimble’s responsibility to inform you of your total number of tardies. Once you receive your fourth tardy, you will receive a referral.
- As a general rule, students may receive a tardy for not being inside of the classroom when the tardy bell rings. Students may also receive a tardy for excessive time outside of the learning environment [long restroom breaks, extended transition times between hallway pass destinations, leaving class before the dismissal bell - including standing by the door within the last three minutes of the class].
- Google Classroom - Each class has its own Google classroom page, you will need to ask your child to show you the information on this page. In short, Google Classroom is replacing Edmodo for several reasons: A) it syncs very nicely with all of the other Google platforms; B) It is a convenient one-stop shop for all academic information. This is THE LOCATION for all assignment details, where students turn in assignments, and where students access any documents and forms needed for the class.
- Class Web Page: http://jerseycusd100kimble.weebly.com/ - This Site is used to store the BIG Ideas of the class. In it, students can access the Course Lesson Plans for each unit of material for both semesters, the Class Calendar, and links to some of the resources available for the course.
- Class Calendar - http://jerseycusd100kimble.weebly.com/calendar.html - This is a part of the Weebly page, but there is special emphasis placed on the calendar because it is updated every day. If students are absent for any reason, they are encouraged to check this calendar for the list of daily tasks.
- Symbaloo Page: http://www.symbaloo.com/home/mix/studentnovelprojects - This is an online version of a “Favorites List.” I have several classroom resources posted here. When students share their work with each other, many times this Symbaloo page is where to find that information.
Classroom Teaching Strategies:
- Lecture - “I talk - you listen” format is used very sparingly.
- Individual work - Many times students are asked to research or prepare documents or presentations. Time is given in class to accomplish some tasks.
- Small group - Students do participate in small group work groups. This is often times used when students are reading the same material or when they are researching the same topic.
- Fish Bowl - This strategy promotes the highest form of learning = conversation. Students are assessed on their abilities to respond, summarize, connect, explain, evaluate, and question topics of interest.
Course Content:
- The core curriculum will be generated through ConnectEd [a McGraw-Hill digital curriculum] and NoRedInk.
- Students may be asked to read or write material in addition to the basic assignments generated through ConnectEd or NoRedInk. If/when additional tasks are assigned, they will be posted on the class calendar and on the Google Classroom page.
